Alice Kessler-Harris of the women’s studies program at Rutgers University, lectured and led a discussion on “The Politics of Culture and the Cultural Concept in American Studies.” Speaking on the struggle for a unified American culture and the reasons why that stuggle has been unsuccessful, Kessler-Harris reminded her audience that “if the fight for identity is a request for inclusion and if the heart of our project is the pursuit of what constitutes our collective or democratic culture, then we, all of us, need to see the new politics of culture as a tug of war over who gets to create the public culture and how.”
